Based on this, we’ll identify suitable alternatives for you. If you cannot find a nameplate on your fireplace, it will unfortunately be difficult to identify the model with certainty. In such cases, we are usually unable to provide a reliable assessment, so replacement is generally required. Our technical tips will show you where to find the nameplate. How can I tell if it's a fireplace insert? Older models of cast-iron fireplace inserts often have a small viewing window or none at all. They also usually have one handle for the firebox and another for the ash pan.
How can I tell if it's a fireplace insert? A fireplace insert typically consists of a steel body and features a large glass-ceramic viewing window that provides a beautiful view of the fire. It also releases heat into the room immediately after being lit.

A typical feature is a series of “slots” above and below the viewing window, which regulate the airflow. Federal Emissions Control Regulation
The First Federal Immission Control Ordinance (1. BImSchV) establishes, among other things, emission limits for particulate matter and carbon monoxide, as well as efficiency requirements for fireplaces. Since January 1, 2015, Stage 2 requirements have applied to new single-room combustion systems.
With a suitable replacement unit, the existing cladding of a wood-burning stove or tiled stove can often be retained while the combustion technology is updated. A specialized contractor and the responsible chimney sweep will determine whether a replacement is possible and what requirements apply in each individual case.
Dates of retrofitting or decommissioning
- through December 31, 1974, or if the date can no longer be determined: December 31, 2014
- January 1, 1975, through December 31, 1984: December 31, 2017
- January 1, 1985, through December 31, 1994: December 31, 2020
- December 1, 1995, through March 21, 2010, inclusive: December 31, 2024

Our Pano and Ronda fireplace inserts
Available only here!
The Pano and Ronda fireplace inserts are the focus of our replacement program. Their distinctive viewing windows—made of prismatic or rounded glass, respectively—give both models a unique look. These units are available exclusively from Camina & Schmid. Depending on the existing fireplace system, the current insert can be replaced with the same or a comparable model. In many cases, the existing surround can be retained and combined with modern, certified combustion technology. A specialized contractor will assess on-site which replacement unit is suitable.
